I was interested in having an alarm installed, how would I go about doing it?

Telephone our office and arrange a survey visit of your premises. This service is totally free of charge and there is absolutely no obligation whatsoever to have the installation carried out!

Why should I choose your company over someone else to give me a quotation?

Established for over fifteen years and having carried out over three thousand installations, we've proved ourselves as a reputable and reliable installation company, with a vast knowledge of the industry.

Are you an approved installer?

Yes we are fully NACOSS approved. NACOSS is the National Approval Council of Security Systems and is the only regulatory body which is recognised by all insurance companies and Police authorities.

Do you use sub contractors?

No! ALL our installation engineers are full-time employees of OCTAGON Security.

How do I know the engineers who will install my alarm are trustworthy?

It is a requirement of our NACOSS approved status that all members of staff are screened by the Police, to ensure they are fit to install security systems.

What sort of alarm systems should we fit?

There are two types of alarm system; Firstly there are those we refer to as "Audible Only" which generally act as a deterrent by making a loud noise if someone breaks in. The second type is what we call a "Monitored" system. This is where the alarm system sends a signal through to a call centre and both the Police and nominated key-holders are notified.

Will the Police attend an Audible Only alarm if a neighbour calls them when it goes off?

No. However, the Police will attend if there is reason to believe that someone has entered the premises illegally.

Which system do you recommend?

Either. Both systems are very effective deterrents against burglary. We generally recommend that you have a monitored alarm system in commercial premises, both to satisfy your insurance company and because commercial premises are normally unattended during the night and are often located in more isolated areas. Most people will specify a preference for one type of system or the other. A monitored alarm gives you additional reassurance that something will happen if your alarm should go off.

Do I own the system or is it rented?

All alarm systems, with the exception of any central monitoring dialling equipment, are owned outright by you, the customer.

Is the alarm system covered by any warranty?

Yes. All parts and labour for items that fail due to normal day-to-day operation of the a system will be covered free of charge for the first twelve months. However, warranty is not maintenance, and you will still require a Maintenance Agreement during the first twelve months.

What makes of alarm system do you install?

Nearly all our alarm systems are designed to fit the premises for which they are intended. We generally use a range of equipment manufacturers for different items. This is because different manufacturers specialise in making certain items. This also enables us to provide what we feel to be the best components for each installation.

How long is the installation likely to take?

Between 1 to 1½ days for two alarm engineers, for a normal 4 sensor alarm system.

Is there going to be much disruption to my home or decor?

We make sure there is absolutely minimal disturbance, and often there is none at all. We endeavour to leave your premises exactly as we found them and this means we even vacuum up after ourselves!

Will there be any visible wiring?

We aim to hide all cabling wherever possible. We may encounter certain conditions where this is difficult, but when this is the case, it will normally be pointed out to you at the time of the survey.

Do you lift any carpets?

Yes. We do have to lift carpets in certain areas to gain access to the floorboards. Our engineers are very experienced in lifting and refitting carpets to route cables where necessary. No extra charge is made for this service, since a professional standard for this particular aspect of the work cannot be guaranteed. Customers may, at their own additional expense, employ a professional carpet fitter to work in conjunction with our engineers to lift and refit the necessary carpets.

Do the wires go under the floorboards or just under the carpets?

A lot of companies will not lift floorboards, but at OCTAGON Security we endeavour to put the cables under the floorboards wherever we can. Sometimes it is not possible, such as in new houses, which have chipboard sheeting instead of conventional floorboards. We feel the protection offered by the alarm system is better if cables are installed under the floorboards.

I always assumed I couldn't have an alarm system because I have a dog. Is this true?

Alarm systems can be fitted into houses where people have either cats or dogs. In these circumstances, we use special pet-tolerant detectors.

Can I arm the system at night time?

Yes. All our systems can be programmed for a "PART" setting which means the upstairs or sleeping areas can be isolated from the system. This offers you maximum peace of mind, in knowing that your downstairs or non-sleeping areas are fully alarmed and your system is protecting you against any night time intruders.

Does the bell box on the front of my house have any flashing lights on it?

Yes. Our external siren boxes have two small LED lights which flash alternately.

Do you put a sit on box on the back of my house?

Yes, we put a "decoy" siren box on the back of your house.

What happens if there is a power-cut?

The burglar alarm has a built-in battery back-up unit which will keep the system operational for at least 8 hours following a power interruption.

If the alarm should go off, how long does the siren ring for?

Should the alarm be activated, to comply with local council policies, the external siren box is set to ring for a maximum of 20 minutes. But, this does not mean that someone can break into your property, and then hide and wait 20 minutes for the alarm to stop. The alarm will re-activate and ring for a further 20 minutes if the intruder returns.

How do I stop the alarm ringing if I accidentally set it off?

Simply enter your correct 4 digit user code at the keypad, and the alarm will stop.

What happens if it just won't turn off?

It is very rare for an alarm not to accept a correct user code to turn it off. Should this happen, you would then need to make a call to our office.

What if the alarm goes wrong outside working hours?

All our customers are given an out-of-hours emergency telephone number to call if they experience difficulty with their alarm system outside working hours. This telephone number is answered by an operator who will page our duty engineer.

Is there any way in which I can shut the entire system off?

No, there isn't. If you could, then it would be an easy way for a burglar to defeat the system!

Does the alarm system need any sort of maintenance?

Yes. All alarms that are fitted by an approved installer are subject to maintenance. Alarms that are "Audible Only" are inspected once a year . Those linked to the Police via a monitoring centre must be inspected every 6 months.

Why do we need maintenance?

Maintenance is very important for maintaining the reliability and performance of the system, as well as satisfying the relevant authorities.

What sort of things are checked?

We check to see the alarm is still functioning correctly and the battery back-up supply is operational. The system is fully checked and also cleaned, to make sure the sensors are free from nesting spiders and any other items which may cause false activations.

Is it true that spiders and flies can activate the alarm system?

Yes! It has been known for spiders and flies to cause false alarm activations. This is usually when spiders have entered the sensor through a cable opening and have nested within the unit. The problem is usually avoided by installing a good quality PIR sensor which is sealed and by ensuring the system is regularly serviced.
